The practical rule: For daily riding, charge to 80–90% and unplug. You will barely notice the range difference — most riders rarely use the last 10% before recharging anyway — but your battery will age noticeably slower.
Some premium ebikes and chargers include a charge-limit setting (80% / 100% modes). If yours has one, use it. If not, simply set a timer or unplug when the charger indicator shows you're close to full.
When 100% is fine: Charge fully before long rides where you need maximum range, and before storing the bike for more than a day. Just don't make 100% your everyday habit.
Lithium cells in a pack are never perfectly identical. Tiny differences in capacity and internal resistance mean some cells reach full charge before others. Over time, these differences grow — and an unbalanced pack loses capacity and becomes less safe.
Modern ebike batteries contain a Battery Management System (BMS) that balances the cells, but balancing only happens during the final stage of charging, when the pack is near full.
The practical rule: Once a month (or roughly every 10–15 charges), charge the battery to 100% and leave it on the charger for 1–2 hours after the indicator turns green. This gives the BMS time to equalize all cells. Then use the battery normally — or better, discharge it a little before the next charge.
This one habit is responsible for many "mystery" range losses that disappear after a full balancing charge.
This is the most critical safety rule, and it is non-negotiable.
Charging a lithium-ion battery below freezing causes lithium plating — metallic lithium forms on the negative electrode instead of being stored in the graphite. This permanently removes capacity and creates a fire risk. The damage is irreversible.
The practical rule: If the battery has been riding in cold weather, bring it inside and let it warm to room temperature for 1–2 hours before charging. Never attempt to charge a cold battery straight off the bike in winter.
Heat is the silent killer of lithium batteries. Charging generates heat on its own, and if you add ambient heat on top, you push the cells into a degradation zone.
The practical rule:
Unlike older nickel batteries, lithium-ion cells do not need to be fully discharged to "reset" their memory. In fact, deep discharge is harmful.
Draining a pack to zero regularly stresses the cells, and leaving a battery at 0% for more than a few days can push cells below their safe minimum voltage (around 2.5V per cell for most lithium-ion chemistries), permanently damaging them. A BMS protects against this, but the protection itself is a last resort, not a habit.
The practical rule: Recharge when the battery reaches 20–30%. The occasional full discharge on a long ride is completely fine — just don't make it routine, and recharge soon after.

The practical rule: For storage of more than a week, charge to about 50% and remove the battery from the bike. Store it in a cool, dry place at room temperature. For winter storage, check the charge level every 4–6 weeks and top it back up to 50% if it has dropped.
This seems obvious, but it is worth stating: always use the charger that came with your battery — or a replacement with identical output specifications.
Every ebike battery is designed for a specific charging voltage and current. A charger with a higher voltage can overcharge cells; a charger with too high a current causes excess heat. Cheap universal chargers from online marketplaces are a common cause of battery damage and fires.
The practical rule: Match the charger's output voltage exactly to the battery's rated voltage. Check the current rating too — using a 4A charger on a battery designed for 2A will generate excessive heat. If in doubt, contact your battery supplier before buying a replacement charger.
